Vinn Beasley (Episode 2) - Cycling Victoria History and Heritage

February 26, 2014

Scion of one of Australia’s (and Footscray’s) most famous and successful cycling families – a third generation descendant of J.J.Beasley; son of Vin Beasley senior; nephew of both John Beasley and Clinton ‘Clinker’ Beasley.   Retired from competitive cycling in 1963 at the age of 28 after a proud career on both road and track.  Started his career in 1952 with Footscray amateurs but soon afterwards joined the pro club where he became a regular member of Footscray’s road premiership team.  Without ever reaching the status of a backmarker, performed consistently in major track handicap races at North Essendon, Olympic Park, and country Victoria, and was several times among the placegetters in the rich Tasmanian Christmas wheel races.  Reached the peak of his career in 1959 when he brilliantly won the Austral Wheel Race in race record time, and sensationally finished second to Peter Panton in the general classification of the Sun Tour. Rode in three Sun Tours (1954, 1959, 1960).  A member of the victorious Victorian 4000 metres pursuit team at 1959 Australian Professional Track Championships (Port Pirie).
